Bonfire Block of the Month Club - May

May 2, 2016
Pin It Welcome to the Bonfire Block of the Month Club for May!  We continue our experiment with string blocks this month.  What do you think?  String blocks are such a good use of scraps.  I love them - even when I'm using a fabric line instead of scraps.  They add a lot of dimension.

MAY BLOCK - TULIP LADY FINGERS  Last month, the string blocks used in the Box & Star Frame were pretty large string blocks.  This month we tone it down a bit with the smaller strings used in this Tulip Lady Fingers block.  I really love how the petals of the tulip help accent the strings in the center.
Remember we are making Sister Blocks for the Bonfire Sampler (from the book Sister Sampler Quilts).  I am partnered up for the BOM with my mom.  We will be swapping blocks at the end to make Sister Quilts. The Tulip Lady Fingers Block is the fifth block in the project.

*ALL of the blocks in the book are interchangeable, so if there is one you'd rather not do, you can always substitute ANY block within the book.  Make 2 blocks each month.

Need some extra help?  See it before you sew it.
There is a tutorial on page 118-119 of the book AND if you'd like to see it in motion, I have a video tutorial for you here.

AnneMarie's Sister Pair of the Tulip Lady Fingers Block
In the block on the left, I went bold, using many of the colors in the palette.  I love the way this turned out.  It's so vibrant.  The block on the right shows a more muted palette.  I also included strings of different widths so you could see the difference.  (The left block uses only 1" strings; the right block has variable widths.)  And the right block uses only one fabric for all the petals.  What do you like best?

My Partner (My Mom)'s Sister Pair of the Box & Star Frame Block
Mom decided to use all the colors in our chosen bundle's palette.  Funny that my first block and her first block turned out almost the same.  I'm loving that raspberry stripe in the right hand block.
