Scrappy Market Tote Take 1

Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts scrap madness is absolutely inspiring.  I look at her work and think "Wow!  Now if only I could do that with my scraps!".  Amanda's projects (this bag, this bag and this pouch) had me up at night.  I wanted my own scrappy bag (market style) for hauling my stuff when I teach.
Here's take 1.  Somehow, in my mind, it's kind of....meh.  I think I'm too close to my scraps.  i.e. I know exactly what quilt/project each scrap comes from - and I have a hard time separating it from that previous use.  To me, it ends up looking too hodge podge.  And not enough cute scrappy.  Does this ever happen to you?  I want so much to see past its previous use...

This is my trial run.  It's a mash up of things I like in market bags.  I wanted a scrappy gusset, so the sides and bottom are one long continuous scrappy piece. I like the form of the bag - just not my darn scraps!
There will be another.  Maybe with a jelly roll.  Does that defeat the purpose?

  1. I think this bag is stunning so you should quit being so hard on yourself! Here's a thought from an outsider's perspective - the only real difference between your project and the 3 of Amanda's that you linked to would be the size of the scraps. In my opinion, yours looks more organized and her's looks more scrappy simply because of the size of the pieces. It's all in what you want.
I love your bag! Carry it proudly!

  3. Love the linen on the bag it ties all the scraps together. Your just too used to your scraps. Swap a bag of your scraps then it will be like brand new fabric.

  4. First of all, I really like your bag! I think it looks great. But I've found that other people's scraps are far more interesting than my own! I've done some scrap swaps and purchased a scrap pack from a store and found that I was more excited to use scraps when I had those other scraps with my own.

  5. Maybe you should sell it?! ;) I love it!!! I know exactly what you mean about your own scraps. I'm the same way. I love getting scrap handmedowns for that reason...

  6. I know what you mean about being sick of your own scraps. But for what it's worth, I think this bag is 100% adorable.

  8. I know what you mean about using your own scraps. I am trying to make an economy block quilt and am finding it hard to make sure all the squares are different. I would love to do a scrappy swap with you or any of your blog readers.
