Cosmo Bag

I've been bitten by the Travel Handmade bug.  I can't help but get excited for the Sewing Summit - but I've got just over a month to get some bags, pouches, etc made.  I must get to work!

I've decided to make the Amy Butler Cosmo Bag.  It's Project #1 in Style Stitches.  And although it's supposed to be the easiest pattern in the book, I must confess I'm intimidated!  I've heard her patterns are a bit difficult, but I'm going to give it a try anyway.  I'm very confident at two dimensional quilts, but as soon as we go 3D, I tend to waver and sweat.

I need your help...  I'm looking for opinions....

Here are my fabric selections.

fabric selection Cosmo Bag
1.  Josephine Kimberling for Robert Kaufman Just Dandy
2.  Amy Butler Midwest Modern
3.  Joel Dewberry Modern Meadow Dogwood Bloom

This bag style typically does a good job of showing off large prints, like the Modern Meadow print.

But I want to use this bag at the Summit and this fall, so I'm wondering if the Modern Meadow print is too summery??

Modern Meadow Main
A.  Modern Meadow

Just Dandy Main
B.  Just Dandy

I like both prints and will have a hard time hiding one as the lining.  But please let me know what you think is the best choice?

  1. Hmm, tough call - I think I'd use the Just Dandy print for the exterior - somehow it feels more like a bag exterior, though I can't tell you why. Good luck with your bag!! Is it your first AB bag?

  2. No, summer! "A" is my favorite.

  3. I love those fabrics - all of them. I think the JD one really shows off the big print. I would go with that on the outside and the dandy in the inside. But either way would be awesome. Can't wait to see it!

  4. I would definitely use the Modern meadow. That is a huge bag and it needs a big print. You saw my amy butler bag with a huge print! ;) Good luck, Cosmo is tough. It's another read the directions carefully bag. You'll do great.

  5. I like the "Too Summery" Modern Meadow. While the pinks in the Just Dandy play nicely with the Midwest Modern, The Cosmo needs a LARGE print, or it will just look busy.

No matterh which you choose for the bag itself, what you could do is make yourself a smaller pouch using the opposite fabric to stick in one of the pockets inside the bag, the coordinating Midwest Modern tying the two together...

Then again, I may not be the best advice giver, I mean, I can't remember the last time I carried a bag of any size!

Either way, I am sure you will do a great job on this.

  6. HA! You're going to have a tough decision, I like the Just Dandy!

Don't worry, the Cosmo bag pattern is pretty straight forward -- I had to read the directions for the handles a couple of times before it clicked, but it still wasn't too tough!

  7. I'd go with B -- so that it's less "summery" -- LOVE these fabrics!

  8. I love the Modern Meadow print so I want to say go with it. But the other one is really nice too. Maybe you could make a skirt with the MM to coordinate with your JDandy Bag. :)

  9. I love the Just Dandy, for what it is worth - I love its retro '50s feel! Enjoy the Sewing Summit.

  10. Both are beautiful! I think the Just Dandy will work very well for the outside of the bag. The darker background is definitely less summery and will hide more smudges from traveling :)

  11. I love the Modern Meadow print for the exterior. I think that larger print would work well, but I'm biased. That is one of my favorite lines. Can't wait to see how you do. You all are making me want to sew up a fabulous bag for Sewing Summit too!

  12. Wow they are both great! I think I'd go A for modern meadow though. A bigger scale print and a little less "busyness" so the prints don't seem to fight each other as much on that large a scale...

  13. I like option B...there's just something about the modern meadow that I'm just not feeling for the bag. The Just Dandy looks like a good all seasons bag!

  14. Wow these are both gorgeous prints! I would have a tough time too, but would go with Modern Meadow. I love the big prints on bags. I am not one who cares much about what is "in season" though. LOL

  15. I love your fabrics! I personally like having a lighter lining, so my choices would be to use the Midwest Modern inside, and Dogwood Bloom as the main/feature fabric contrasted with the Just Dandy for the handles. I think if you use the two darker colors, it won't have such a "summery" feel, but still be pretty!

  16. I like the Just Dandy for the outside....all 3 are gorgeous though. I would like to carry the JD on the outside for Fall.

  17. I love them both but I'd choose the Modern Meadow. With such a large bag I just think it just needs a larger print.

  18. I have that book...sitting on a shelf...mocking me and daring me to try something-anything! I personally would use Modern Meadow, it's large scale is fantastic. Good luck and I eagerly await pictures of your finished bag to inspire me!

  19. Those fabrics are great! Don't be intimidated, it's time consuming but comes together quite nicely, I'm sure yours will be fabulous :-)

  20. What a shame this couldn't be one of those bags where you could inside it out and use both fabric choices. But I love the Just Dandy for fall approaching. What a cute bag.

  21. I definitely think you should go for Modern Meadow. I am HUGE fan of large prints. Pink works in any season!

  22. Beautiful fabrics! Just Dandy would be my choice. Or you could solve the problem by making 2 bags. :)

  23. Hmmm ... that's a tough one! At first I thought I liked the Just Dandy print, but now that I'm thinking about it a little more, I think I have to go with the MM. Becky's right, such a huge bag calls for a really large scale print. And there's lots of beige in that print, so I don't think it's too summery at all, I think it will be great for fall. But really I don't think you could go wrong either way. (I'm so helpful, aren't I?) Good luck with the pattern, and I can't wait to see your bag in person at the summit! : )

  24. I love each of those prints. Since it's going to be fall, I'd choose the Just Dandy for the inside, but really either way will look amazing.

I've made the Cosmo bag as my first bag. It isn't the easiest bag in the book IMHO. I've done several from that book and I kind of don't want to tell you this, but "to me" it was the most difficult. However, having said that, it is totally possible. You'll do just fine. Read carefully. The problem for me is that there isn't that many pictures and I'm a high visual person. But, it's totally doable. You'll be fine--really. I'm anxious to see what you think of the pattern instructions and the final result. Please keep us posted. If you have questions, you can always e-mail me. Lroghair (at) aol (dot) com

  25. Just Dandy -- with the dandelions on the outside! Love that print! Good luck with the bag -- I haven't tried it but I'm sure you'll do fine. Eager to see the finished bag.
