Who is this Gen X Quilter?

Jun 29, 2010
Pin It I thought I'd share a little background info on me to get things started....

Let's see. Where should I begin?

When I was young, my mom repeatedly asked to teach me to sew. And like any girl growing up in the 80s and 90s, I was desperate to be independent and everything-not-domestic. I was slightly tom-boyish, preferring soccer and sports to dance lessons. Absolutely refusing to learn to sew and cook.

I went off to college, and for the first time, had to cook for myself. So starts my love of cooking. I studied mechanical engineering, and being 1 of 2 women in my classes, I was completely submerged in everything male. Gears, beers, and dirty jokes. It was a lot to handle. After working a couple years in the trucking industry (of all places!), I married my husband. I relocated, went to grad school, and finally started to reconnect with the artist in me. I tried a variety of crafty hobbies.....cross-stitch.... knitting..... scrapbooking.....

But nothing really hit home until I tried quilting. I asked for my first sewing machine for Christmas at 28 when I was pregnant with my first son. I've never looked back. I became obsessed! What a fantastic hobby! I am self-taught and enjoy creating my own designs. The need for detail, precise cuts and seam allowances perfectly suits the anal retentive engineer in me.

In a complete turn-around, I am now a domestic diva, staying at home with my 2 boys and sneaking quilting into every spare 10 minutes I can find. I hope this blog will help connect quilters in Gen X/Y so that we may keep quilting going strong in years to come. Because, like me, I think many women (and men) in our generation never learned to sew. I look forward to hearing about you too!

Welcome to the new blog for Gen X and Gen Y Quilters!!

Jun 24, 2010
Pin It So glad to see you!

I went to my first NQA Quilt Show in Columbus, Ohio over the weekend. It was fun and inspiring, however, I kept noticing I was one of the very few under 50. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the gray-haired grannies, many of whom have volumes of knowledge to share with us younger quilters. But where are the Gen X and Gen Y quilters??? I would like to create a network with quilters in my own age group and learn what projects you are working on.

Here is my vision for this blog:

1. Interactive! Not just me talking about my projects. Guest bloggers and Follower profiles.

2. Topic Questions: Find out more about each other's skills, tips, ideas, etc.

3. Patterns and Quilt-Alongs

4. Contests: Create our own Best-of-Show collection!

5. The sky is the limit: looking for suggestions from fellow Gen X/Y quilters.....

But none of this can happen if we don't have a community.

Become a follower.... Tell your friends.....
....... Leave me a comment!!

And I hope to see you back again soon! Pin It
